James and I first visited this (at the time) sleepy Mexican cruise port more than a decade ago and we're thrilled to see it continue to develop and expand. That's why I was so excited to see two separate - but linked announcements recently, that Royal Caribbean was buying the Costa Maya Cruise Port and that they were also building out a new private vacation destination experience exclusive to their guests so that they can deliver a similar experience to what they do with their industry-leading "Perfect Day at CocoCay". ******Planning Your Mexican Caribbean Cruise Around An Uncertain Beach Club****Book A Cruise****Article Index** Because the opening is in doubt, the two of you can plan a Costa Maya cruise that works whether or not the new beach club ever appears. - **Book the itinerary, not the beach club.** Choose the cruise because you both like the ship, the dates and the other ports. Treat any new private destination as a bonus and not the reason to sail. - **Ask your advisor for the current status.** Plans like this change quickly, so have Heather confirm what is actually open and scheduled for your sailing date. Get the answer close to booking and again before final payment. - **Pick a backup beach day.** Decide now what you would do in Mahahual if the new club is not available, such as a local beach club or a simple walk along the waterfront. A shared plan B takes the pressure off the day. - **Compare it with another adults area.** If a quieter, adults-only stretch of sand is the real goal, look at what other ships and ports offer today. Talk through which of those suits your pace. - **Check change and refund terms.** Ask what the cruise line allows if a port or itinerary changes after you book. In May 2026 Mexico's environment minister said Perfect Day Mexico would not be approved, and Royal Caribbean withdrew its environmental application on May 19. While we don't yet have specifics on the exact location, there is currently a small beach club just north of the cruise pier there so I speculate that's where it will be located. Otherwise, there is frankly plenty of land for them to build out on land as well as potentially construct a new cruise ship pier.  This Mahahual location offers an ideal setting for those looking to improve their cruise experience with a taste of the vibrant Mexican Caribbean.
